Looks like it. Today Scripps, who owns Food Network and HGTV, said they will buy the Travel Channel (my alma mater, you could say). According to The New York Times, its pretty much a done deal.
If the sale goes through, it means Scripps has beaten out News Corp, Time Warner and Comcast among others for the network. At one point, bids were believed to have gone as high as one billion dollars. The new venture would begin sometime in 2010.
According to the agreement, Cox would remain owner of a portion of the network, with Scripps acquiring about 65 percent. If the sale goes through, Scripps would be spending about $181 million.
As some of you know, I “cut my travel teeth” at the Travel Channel, first in 1999 as a co-host of Intersection and again later in 2004-2005 with the Emmy nominated Travel Gear. In 2007 Cox acquired Travel Channel from Discovery Communication.
More from my moles on the inside as it develops.
